Auchenflower is an inner suburb of the City of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. It is approximately 2.5 kilometres west of the Brisbane CBD bordering the Brisbane River.
The area was formerly populated by rural estates from Milton to Toowong in the 1850s.
John Ward, a Brisbane ironmonger acquired a block rising from the river bank north-west to Milton Road in 1876. He built a substantial house on the highest level ground part with a view south-west to Mount Coot-tha. In 1880, the house was sold to Thomas McIlwraith.
McIlwraith named the suburb Auchenflower after the McIlwraith family estate in Ayrshire, Scotland. Auchenflower is a Gaelic name for ‘field of flowers’.
Auchenflower has several attractions to visit.
These include the McIlwraith Croquet Club, a charming well-preserved relic from the 1920s. It is a venue for recreational purposes only especially for lawn games.
My Thai, one of Brisbane's most exquisitely decorated Thai restaurants. It serves authentic food which is consistently fresh and well executed. The Steamtrain Espresso Bar, and Ciro's Italian Restaurant were also found in the suburb.
Auchenflower has a school for kindergarten which is the Montessori Children’s House and Montessori Infants’ House. It also has Hubbards School, an independent co-educational institution.
Auchenflower also has the Auchenflower Stadium, an Australian basketball centre.
The major events such as The 2013 Australian National Basketball Championships, 2011 U14 National Australian Basketball Championship and the 2014 U16 Boys State Basketball Championship were held in the stadium.
