About Bowen Hills

Bowen Hills is an industrial and residential inner suburb and a railway hub of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It  is about 3 km  northeast of the Brisbane Central Business District.

According to the 2016 Australian Census the suburb recorded a population of 3,266.

History of Bowen Hills

Bowen Hills was named after Sir George Bowen, the first Governor of Queensland in 1859 to 1868.

The suburb was first occupied by the indigenous Chepara people. Its higher parts were named Barrambin, which means windy place because they caught the breezes.

On its lower lying part to the west, the Queensland Acclimatisation Society occupied Bowen Park in 1862. Its area was later known as the RNA Exhibition Grounds or the 'Ekka'.

It was in  1866 when Bowen Hills was defined as a postal district.

Tourist Attractions in Bowen Hills

Bowen Hills has several recreational facilities that include The Twelfth Night Theatre, a theatre that has many well-known actors have appeared in plays.

The Old Museum which is now home to the Queensland Youth Orchestras. It provides rehearsal and performance space for community music and arts groups.

Also, the Bowen Park, a small and peaceful public pleasure garden that features walking and cycling paths, a bandstand, seating and a delightful old toilet block

Sports in Bowen Hills

YMCA Bowen Hills is an elite sports centre that has facilities for basketball, boccia, goal ball, artistic gymnastics, gym fitness and wheelchair basketball/rugby sports.

The Perry Park which is also a sporting ground and home to the Brisbane Strikers Football Club that plays in the National Premier Leagues Queensland.
