Clayfield is a residential suburb on Sandgate Road in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located 7 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD. It is bordered to the north by Nundah, to the east by Ascot and Hendra, to the west by Wooloowin and to the south by Albion.
Clayfield got its name from the fine white-grey sedimentary clay mined in Albion that is used for brick making. The suburb became the locale of several large residences later in the decade, vying with Hamilton as Brisbane's choicest northside suburb.
Clayfield has numerous villages listed in the Queensland Heritage Register.
This includes the Lyndhurst, also known as The Reid House, Tarranalma, and Ralahyne. Turrawan which has been purposely designed to be a doctor’s surgery and residence was also known as Turrawan Private Hospital and Clayfield House. Also, Stanley Hall, which is a former residence, was now part of one of Brisbane's private schools which is the St Rita's College.
There are several schools that can be found within the suburb.
This includes Aviation High School, formerly known as; Hendra Secondary College. The St Rita's College that is an independent Roman Catholic secondary day school for girls.
Clayfield College is an independent, Uniting Church and Presbyterian, day and boarding school, predominantly for girls.
This school purchased the old Clayfield Bowling Centre which now became a Physical Education Centre. The centre is for inclusion of a competition grade gymnastics arena, including international standard basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton courts.
