About Hendra

Hendra is a residentialnsuburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

It lies roughly 6 kilometres north-east of Brisbane central business district. It is bounded by the Kedron Brook outfall on the north, and bisects the main road to Nudgee.

History of Hendra

The suburb was originally a farming district that has crops of citrus fruits, grapes and pineapples as well as dairy herds.

The suburb's name Hendra was derived from the station on the Eagle Farm railway line, probably bestowed by the Railways Commissioner. The suburb is a traditional Cornish place name which means an ancient or old hamlet or town.

Tourist Attractions in Hendra

Hendra is home to an abundance of restaurants and cafes, take-aways, antiques and pubs. On Junction Road and Sandgate Road is where many local shops can be found. Parks including the notably Beirne Park and Bannister Park, bikeways and walkways are also established in the suburb.

One of the heritage-listed villas that the suburb is proud of is Glengariff. It is a residence of the millionaire Thomas Beirne, located at 5 Derby Street.

Schools and Sports in Hendra

Hendra State School, a government primary school at 309 Nudgee Road. Aviation High is a government secondary school located at Widdop Street. Situated at 23 Bowman Street is the Our Lady Help of Christians School which is a Catholic primary school.

All Stars Baseball Club T.C Beirne Park, Ti-trees Swimming Club, and the Northern Suburbs Bridge Club are the sporting clubs of the suburb.
