Herston is an inner suburb of Brisbane, with mixed residential and institutional uses. It is approximately 3.6 kilometres by car north of the Brisbane CBD.
Europeans first settled the suburb in the 1850s.
The Queensland's first premier, Sir Robert Herbert built a farm in the area, and lived with his Attorney-General, John Bramston in the farmhouse. The house was named Herston - the combination of their surnames and later on also became the suburb's name. The majority of the suburb’s streets was named after the local identities known at its time.
Herston grew into a largely working-class with numerous local businesses and neighbourhood stores.
Notably parks in the suburb are Gould Road Park and Rasey Park that features car park, barbeque and picnic area/shelter, sporting fields for hockey and cricket.
There is also the Victoria Park which includes the Centenary Pool, Mental Health Fellowship, car parks, dog off-leash area, outdoor fitness/exercise trail, lagoon, memorial/monument, multicultural community centre, playground, shared pathways, and toilet.
The only schools in Herston are the Royal Brisbane and ACT for Kids Campus of the Queensland Children's Hospital School which is only for in-patients children of the hospitals.
Kelvin Grove State College is the nearest primary and secondary school in the suburb.
The suburb has its sport organisation including Queensland Rugby Union that has headquarter at Ballymore Stadium. The stadium is also the home ground of the Brisbane City team in the National Rugby Championship.
