About Highgate Hill

Highgate Hill is a southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is about 2 km south-east of the city centre and overlooks the St Lucia Reach of the Brisbane River.

History of Highgate Hill

The Highgate Hill area, before British settlement, was a hunting ground for indigenous people from nearby camping grounds. In the Turrbal or Jagara language, the name of the suburb was called Beenung-urrung which means frilled lizard.

It is believed that George Wilson, whose house was at the top of Bellevue Street named the locality Highgate Hill.

The name first appears in an advertisement for a land sale in 1864. The suburb began to increase with redevelopment during the interwar years and it continued after the Second World War.

Tourist Attractions in Highgate Hill

High gate has a small park located at the highest point of the suburb. It boasts excellent views of the city and the surrounding hills and is popular during summer due to its cool breezes.

There is also the Brydon Street park that leads into a gully down to the river, and the Lyons Playground Park which is also known as Paradise Park. Lyons is a well equipped small park that has a community garden.
