About Newstead

Newstead is a suburb on the inner northern riverside, in Brisbane City, Queensland, Australia. Newstead had a population of 2,193 according to the 2016 census.

Newstead is located 3.3 km (2.1 mi ) northeast of the central business district of Brisbane.

The suburb is bounded to the north by Breakfast Stream, to the east by Brisbane Water.

History of Newstead

Founded and established in 1846 by visionary grazier Patrick Leslie, the suburb was named after the Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire, England.

The present role of the suburb as an upmarket suburban neighborhood belies its manufacturing history.

The eastern side of the area was once occupied by lumber yards, asbestos operations, wharves, and woolstores

Tourist attraction in Newstead

The Jewel in the Crown of South East Queensland’s Historic Homes. This famous landmark was built in 1846 and was inhabited by some of the most prominent colonial personalities in Brisbane, including Patrick Leslie, Captain John Clements Wickham and George Harris.

Newstead Building, the oldest remaining home in Brisbane, is the gem in the crown of historic property in South East Queensland.
